Takeover week: Shirley Hughes

The author of best-selling children's books Alfie and Dogger on teaching children how to look, the importance of libraries and her love of hats.

Best-selling author of children's books, Shirley Hughes is one of our guest editors this week. She has chosen the following subjects:

Young children live in a digitally speedy age bombarded by electronic images. Shirley is passionate that they are taught to slow and appreciate what's right in front of them. Gill Hart, Head of Education at the National Gallery in London, comes to the studio to share her tips on teaching children visual literacy.

Shirley gets inundated with letters from people asking how to go about creating a picture books. It is, she says, a collaborative process. To discuss this process, Jane and Shirley are joined by Andrea MacDonald, editorial director for picture books at Penguin Random House and freelance designer Ness Wood.

Another passion of Shirley's is the public library. It is an institution that is under threat and Shirley is concerned that too few people recognise their value. Reporter Jac Phillimore goes to Edinburgh's Central Library.

Shirley talks about making clothes and her love of wearing hats. Finally, Shirley's son, Ed Vulliamy reveals the true story behind Dogger and recalls his mother drawing fantastical pictures for older children.
