Pause For Thought

From writer Abdul-Rehman Malik:

Chris, I have always prided myself with being able to live with a fair bit of chaos. My so-called work-life balance forever feels like it鈥檚 on the edge of toppling over. I juggle projects and deadlines like a high wire performer 鈥 who鈥檚 decided to toss dinner plates in the air while shuffling along a trapeze wire. Inevitably something comes crashing down and even then 鈥 at least most of the time 鈥 some deep breaths and high quality caffeine sets me up to pick up the pieces.

But the other day, I hit the brick wall. With the Eid festival upon us 鈥 and the entire house in a tizzy 鈥 I walked into our bedroom and sort of lost it. Not at anyone in particular, but really at myself. How did I let it come to this? Clothes were piled up on the chair in the corner, books were teetering on the edge of the desk and those hooks behind the doors were literally heaving with bags of papers collected from one too many conferences. 听

I decided to put everything aside and tackle the mess. As I sorted clothes, papers and books, I kept finding other unusual things hidden here and there: previously used cardboard boxes, pieces of strings tied together, scraps of paper with scribbles all over them. They all went into a big recycling bag 鈥 that is until my son found the bag.

鈥淎bba! What are you doing? I need these things!鈥

But why, I exclaimed, they鈥檙e just boxes and scraps and I鈥檓 trying to tidy up. He started to tear up a bit.

鈥淣o Abba! I need them for my imagination!鈥

It reminded me of something The Little Prince says in Antoine de Saint-Exup茅ry鈥檚 celebrated 1943 book. 鈥淕rown-ups鈥, he complained, 鈥渘ever understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.鈥

Saint-Exup茅ry 鈥 who was born 117 years ago today 鈥 was on to something. Children come into the world with a truly divine gift: oceans of imagination and heaps of ingenuity. They make and remake the world any way they choose. Adults like me forget that.

So while my room is cleaner, the boxes and knick-knacks remain 鈥 for now. Where I see trash, my son sees possibility. As much I like a clean room, I like his mess a whole lot more.听听
