Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph

I celebrated Eid yesterday.Ìý

Ramadan, the month of fasting, is finally over. Given we had the longest fasts for 30 years and saw the hottest days in the UK for 40 years, let’s just say it was no walk in the park.
There were days when I was blubbering at the table as I drank that first glass of water at sunset. Not every day was like that, I hasten to add, however given the state of me across a number of evenings, I can genuinely understand why people ask, “why do you it?â€
People give different reasons. Some explain they fast for awareness of the poor.
Indeed, hunger and thirst creates a heightened state of awareness.
In being thirsty, I crave water. This makes me hyper aware of my easy access to water. I don't have to carry it for miles, or drink from contaminated sources.
In the experience of hunger, I am aware of how easily I can find food. There are two supermarkets and a dozen food outlets within a five-minute walk from my house. I count my blessings.Ìý

All of this in stark contrast to the tens of millions who do not know where their next meal is coming from.

Others cite discipline—and it does take an enormous amount of self-control. Such strength can be harnessed for achieving all manner of things. Others reference health and well-being—and science has shown us that fasting done well can reboot our systems. Ìý
For me, the simple truth is, I fast because I hold it as a fundamental pillar of my faith. By fasting I am searching for a relationship with my Creator based on Surrender to the Divine Will.

Words such as Creator, Surrender, Divine Will – they can all seem very far away from our day to day reality, and have all but disappeared from our modern vocabulary. However, fasting for 19 hours a day for 30 straight days, connects you to your primordial self in ways that words can barely capture. There is a rawness, a connection to one’s own frailty, to one’s mortality, to one’s flesh and blood, and an absolute connection to one’s own humanity.
And in experiencing this, I perceive the raw essence of the humanity of others, fellow travellers in this journey of life. I see this connection as an extraordinary gift of the Blessed Month of Ramadan.Ìý

Happy Eid everyone!
