Prayer for the Day Script with Jonathan Rea
Good morning.
Divided loyalty had become part of daily routine for Ub Iwerks.Β
A talented artist, he was completing the tasks set by his employers, but underneath the legitimate work, there were piles of drawings of a little mouse, being developed in secret with his good friend Walt Disney.Β
Walt did the original design of Mortimer Mouse in a train. Β His wife changed the name to Β Mickey. And Ub Iwerks developed the character and did the 6 or 700 drawings for the first short film.Β
It was called Plane Crazy, and it premiered 89 years ago today. Mickey builds a plane to try and impress his girlfriend Minnie, and she agrees to join him on the inaugural flight. Chaos and danger ensue with lots of comically-drawn near-misses. But Minnie is unimpressed. She rejects Mickey’s amorous advances, and jumps from the plane, using her dress as a parachute.Β
The first audience enjoyed the film, but it took a lot of perseverance before Mickey became a household name. Β Β
Walt Disney said it was fun to do things that were impossible. And he liked to remind people that his success was all started by a mouse. But he also needed other talented people around him to make his work a global brand.Β
The value of our perseverance and effort increases massively, when combined with an appreciation of the humbling truth that we all need help beyond ourselves. Β
Lord, in our creativity, help us to reject self-sufficiency, and open our minds to the help we can receive from others. May we echo the confidence of St Paul, who was able to say that he could do all things Β - but only through Christ who gave him strength.Β
Amen Β
