The band formed in 1967 and emerged to be one of the most important group in the English folk rock movement. Their seminal album Liege & Leif was voted the 'Most Influential Folk Album Of All Time' in the 2006 Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 2 Folk Awards.

The band in their current format are Simon Nicol (guitar, lead vocals), Dave Pegg (bass guitar, mandolin), Ric Sanders (fiddle), Chris Leslie (fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki, lead vocals) and Gerry Conway (drums). Former members include Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchings, Sandy Denny and Dave Swarbrick.
