Shakespeare-Wallah (R)

Actors Shahid Kapoor, Tabu and director Vishal Bhardwaj all speak passionately about the power of Shakespeare.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Asian Network looks at the long-standing relationship between the Bard and the Indian Film Industry.

With the recent success of the director Vishal Bhardwaj's Shakespeare trilogy, this programme examines the dramatist's influence on the Indian Diaspora from the days of the Raj, the influence of Parsi theatre companies who toured his plays throughout the country from the 19th century and the early film adaptations in the 1930's.

This programme, presented by Hardeep Singh Kohli also focuses on the Bollywood films heavily inspired by Shakespeare including Maqbool, Omkara, Haider, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Goliyan Ki Raas-lila, Ram Leela.

With contributions from actors Shahid Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Tabu and of course Vishal Bhardwaj himself, all speak passionately about the power and allure that a playwright from 16th century England continues to have over modern Indian audiences.

This programme first aired in April 2016.
