Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London

Like everyone, I was shocked by the news report on Tuesday about the bomb apparently aimed at blowing up the Borussia Dortmund football team on its way to a match with Monaco. Yet, the amazing thing is how wonderful stories emerge from horrible circumstances.

The game was naturally postponed for 24 hours which meant that thousands of Monaco fans were stranded in Germany. So a call went out for Dortmund fans to open their homes and accommodate opposition supporters. Which they did. And my favourite picture doing the rounds is a selfie of fans wearing different team shirts around a table – eating, drinking and laughing together.

Today is Maundy Thursday, the day Christians recall the last meal Jesus shared with his friends before his arrest and execution. Almost the final thing he said to them was that the way the world would know who were his genuine followers was by their love – not by their doctrines or creeds or regular churchgoing but by love demonstrated in practical ways.

Recently I took the funeral of an 85-year-old woman. She had no known family so the council arranged her funeral and I was told no one would be present. Arriving at the cemetery I felt sad to know nothing about the lady. Then, to my surprise, two young men turned up at the graveside – neighbours who had kept an eye on her and fetched her shopping.

Both men had busy work lives yet took the time out to be there. Before lowering the coffin into the ground, I asked them to tell me about her. Within a few moments, an anonymous woman became real to me. We laughed and shed tears as stories were told. And together laid Dora to rest.

I don’t know how many of the German fans opening their homes to strangers this week were religious people. I know for sure that the two Islington men taking time out to bid farewell to a lonely neighbour weren’t. Yet each of these remind me that the heart and soul of religion (of being truly human) is the compassion and kindness we show to others, friends and strangers alike. The rest is window-dressing.

Finally, our thoughts are with Marc Bartra, the player injured in the blast. Here’s to his full and swift recovery.
