Diner questions where Lizzie has been on her nocturnal wanderings, and a chance encounter with a dressmaker on the streets of Bristol reveals a clue to John Diner's past.

Lizzie Fawkes decides to visit the dressmaker to find out more about Diner's first wife Lucie and the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death.

Based in Bristol in 1792, Helen Dunmore's novel is set against a backdrop of the French Revolution.

It touches on radical idealism, property speculation, political turmoil and private tragedy...
