Good Morning. Some years ago, headlines were made when the Archbishop of Canterbury revealed that he sometimes doubted the existence of God. He admitted he was sometimes unsure whether God was there and whether He intervenes in our world. Despite the fleeting doubts, here is a man who has devoted his life to his faith and to God. And despite not being 100% certain about every point of theology, Justin Welbyβs leap of faith is rooted in personal experience rather than cerebral, scientific empirical evidence.
There is something beautifully human about doubt. Especially during those times when life knocks you for six and you wonder whether indeed anyone is in fact there. Many people of faith have learnt the liberating truth of the words: βI donβt know.β
Doubt is part of human experience. Despite the wedding band on our finger, we may doubt that our spouse truly loves us. Despite the qualifications we have, we may doubt whether we are the right people for the job. Despite life-long friendships, we may sometimes feel completely and utterly alone.

A quest for certainty in every area of our lives can cause us more angst than we may realise. Maybe the divine is telling us to let go, to not be anxious, to lean not on our own understanding. To trust that this omnipresent and all-loving being is capable of surviving our questions.
I pray that we may little by little strip away a simplistic, non-thinking faith from a God whose story we find whispering through the words of scripture. Amen
