Pause for Thought

 Last week, during a visit to one of my favourite cities – New York, I popped into a lovely and welcoming synagogue.  I noticed that their library was rather messy, with volumes jumbled together, but all the books looked loved and well used.  By a happy coincidence, it was World Book Day.

 My wife and I have always been book buyers and to a first-time visitor, our home, must resemble a bookshop after a tornado.  There are books everywhere – on shelves, in piles, even under beds.  Occasionally we cull, but parting with a book is a bit like parting with an old friend.  Our kids love reading too and we often prise a book from a sleeping face or remove it from under a pillow.

 Books and Jewish life are almost synonymous.  Studying Torah – the sacred literature of Judaism, especially Bible and Talmud – lies at the heart of vibrant Jewish life.  People who study together share ideas and, more importantly, disagree with each other based on concepts rather than personalities.

 But my love affair with books goes deeper still – a book is a portable world, a gateway to the thoughts of other people in other times and other cultures and a window to the soul of humanity.  Books allow us challenge our assumptions, create a space for self away from information overload, and emerge refreshed and changed.

 It’s fascinating that the insecure have always tried to destroy the books that contain ideas they find threatening.  The playwright Heinrich Heine notes that where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people.  It’s a sobering thought, but it’s also important to remember that not every book is worth reading.  One of my favourite thinkers, the Rebbe of Kotzk, reminds us that ‘all that is thought should not be said; all that is said should not be written; all that is written should not by published; all that is published should not be read’.

 I believe reading nurtures in us the most important quality of all – curiosity, which allows to explore every part of this world and become creative thinkers themselves.  As the American author, Toni Morrison said, “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.â€
