Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

In the English language, we use the word TIME in vastly different ways. For example β€œThe TIME is coming up to 9:30” is different from β€œI’m going through a difficult time.”

A well-known Irish songwriter, Tommy Sands, put it beautifully in an email to me recently. He was talking about past experiences leading to a fear of the future. He said: β€œThey say that time heals, but time is never there when you need it – the neighbours are.” Friends, neighbours and fellow travellers carry us through life’s difficulties. Fear rules our lives only if we let it.

When I’m frightened by the future – and it happens often – I immediately do something that scares me. That’s how I conquer fear of living. Fear of dying is different though. That’s a work in progress.

President Nelson Mandela had a helpful attitude to fear. β€œI learned that courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it,” he wrote. Courage knows what not to fear. FEAR should be an acronym for Face Everything And Recover.

When I’m with people who have lived a long life I listen intently; not only to what they say in words but to their sighs and their smiles and their eyes especially. That’s when I notice fear and love and faith in a merciful God.

I remember once holding the hand of a lovely aged woman who mothered six wonderful children. After prayers one night we talked about her children. I asked her if she loved them all equally.

β€œI loved them all, but NOT equally,” she whispered. β€œThe one who was weak I loved the most until she felt strong; I loved the one most who was hurt until he was healed and the one who felt a failure, I loved him until he felt good about himself.”

In these sacred moments I know that in life and death – real practical love is all that matters.Β  Such wisdom teaches me that a life and in death love makes sense of everything.Β
