Good Morning.Β Β On this day in 1929, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the winners of the first-ever Academy Awards – the Oscars. The recipients’ names were printed on the back page of the Academy’s newsletter, Β How things change! Later this month the Oscar ceremony will be broadcast to over 200 countries and hopes to attract an audience of a billion people worldwide.Β Β Why are we so drawn to the Oscars? They offer good entertainment. The women are glamorous, the men good-looking, the outfits either gorgeous or disastrous. The parties are legendary. And of course there’s the β€˜wish I was there’ factor, either as a screen legend and celebrity, a world-famous journalist, or as one of the super-rich and well-connected guests.Β Β There’s no harm in a bit of light entertainment. The problems start when we allow ourselves to feel the worse for it. When watching Bake-Off emphasizes our own shortcomings in the kitchen, or being a fan of Strictly means we feel less confident on the dance floor. One of the key tenets of Buddhism is that every person without exception has extraordinary potential and ability, even if we’re not always aware of it. On this basis, the whole process of enlightenment is literally about lightening ourselves of the habits and misunderstandings that hold us back. AsΒ one of my Buddhist teachers, Lama Yeshe saidΒ β€œOur problem is that inside us there’s a mind going, β€˜Impossible, impossible, impossible. I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.’ We have to banish that mind from the solar system”.Β Let’s pray we can all find ways to discover and celebrate our own particular strengths, build our confidence in our own abilities, and use these to create a happier life for ourselves and for others.Β
