The experience of childbirth, Midwife Clemmie Hooper, Novelist Claire Fuller, Women's football
Midwife Clemmie Hooper answers questions mothers are too shy to ask. Plus the Crawley Old Girls prove you're never too old to take up football and novelist Claire Fuller.
Midwife and mother of four Clemmie Hooper is in studio to explain why there's room on the shelf for another manual about pregnancy and birth as her book How To Grow a Baby and Push it Out is published. And, she answers the questions listeners are too embarrassed or rushed to ask their midwife. Can sex when you're pregnant hurt the baby and do women always poo in labour?
A recent report by the National Childbirth Trust and The National Federation of Women's Institutes found that 50% of new mothers reported a 'red flag' event which might mean that there weren't enough midwives available during childbirth or postnatal care. Elizabeth Duff, Senior Policy Adviser at the NCT explains the findings and recommendations of the report.
We hear from three players - including the founding member - of Crawley Old Girls, the first team of its kind for older women, on how the club started, winning at the FA Women's Awards and what's next for the team.
Swimming Lessons is Claire Fuller's second novel. Her first, Our Endless Numbered Days, won the Desmond Elliott Prize, the prestigious award for first-time novelists. Claire didn't start writing until she was forty. She joins Jane to discuss her writing career, how she never planned to be a writer and what makes her to write about people who disappear.
