Shalamar were created back in the 70s by Dick Griffey (then a booking agent for Soul Train) and Don Cornelius - they were originally session singers and dancers. The first hit was the 1977 Uptown Festival released on Soul Train Records. Dick and Don then decided to replace the session singers with Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel - they joined the original lead singer Gary Mumford. Another change came in 1979 when Howard Hewett joined the band. They got their first US million selling record with The Second Time Around later that year.

In the UK the band had a string of hits with tracks like Take That To The Bank, I Can Make You Feel Good, A Night to Remember, There It Is and Friends. The band's sales in the UK went up when Jeffrey Daniel demonstrated his body-popping dancing skills on Top of the Pops - this was the first appearance of the moonwalk. Michael Jackson was a big fan of the group, and especially Jeffrey's dance moves, and Jeffrey went on to co-choreograph Jackson's Bad and Smooth Criminal videos.

The 'classic' line-up of Daniels, Hewett and Watley had three gold albums in the US. The group took a knock when Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel both left the band and there was a line-up change - the new version of Shalamar (still including Hewett) did have a hit with in 1984 with Dancing in the Streets from the Footloose soundtrack and they won a Grammy for Don't Get Stopped in Beverley Hills from the film Beverly Hills Cop in 1984. Hewett finally decided to leave the band to go solo in 1985.

In 1996 the original line-up along with LL Cool J appeared on Babyface's million-selling single This is for The Lover In You - a cover of the Shalamar 1980 single Three For Love. In 1999 Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett reformed Shalamar and played in Japan - this was followed by many years of touring the UK from 2000 onwards.

Shalamar have sold over 25 million records worldwide.
