Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson, writer and Vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London:

Mostly I try to skip the January sales – or wait until almost the end when the crowds have disappeared – along with the best bargains! But a couple of years ago I was in town for a clergy conference, so on the way home I popped into a large store and picked up a couple of things.

Ìý

Waiting to pay, I was fidgeting on my phone when a security man ominously asked if he could have a word. I stepped aside. Then awkwardly, he said, ‘Excuse me Father.’ (Oops – I was still wearing my dog collar.) ‘I’m sorry, I know you out shopping, but I’ve wanted to talk to a priest for a while…and saw you standing there. I’m not very religious, but…I wonder if you’d mind.’

Ìý

For the next 15 minutes Frank told me about something he’d done several years before which had seriously hurt another person, and left him with a mountain of guilt. It was a peculiar confessional – surrounded by a bustling crowd of shoppers. But there, in the middle of the store, I took Frank’s hand, looked him in the eye and said, ‘Frank, God forgives you. Forgive yourself.’ He was a big guy. But he cried. Tears of relief, he said.

Ìý

Frank had messed up. He knew that. But by not dealing with the situation he allowed guilt to become an accusing voice in his head, which told him he was a bad person. He wasn’t a bad person. He had done something wrong which he needed to address, but that didn’t make him a bad person.

Ìý

The writer Philip Pullman says that after nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world. But the really important story is the one in our head – the things we tell ourselves about ourselves.

Ìý

Going into 2017, most of us have things we’d like to leave behind, things we’d like to change – I know I do. The good news is, I believe we can, but first we need to dump guilt – one of the least useful emotions – and start telling our self a different story, then acting it out.

Ìý

I was the one out shopping that day, but ironically I reckon the security man gave himself the best bargain!
