Maria McErlane rummages through the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ archive of Funny Women in song for your delectation and delight. Sing Something Sinful evokes times gone by when women sang about the social mores, their troubles, status, difficult lives and subjects that in truth, it was deemed unacceptable to speak of.

Women won the right to vote in 1928, within living memory for some of us, but power and status automatically afforded to men has been a hard won battle and for many in the world an ongoing struggle.

This has been even more apparent in comedy. However, what was deemed unacceptable for women to discuss in days of yore became tolerable if they 'sang' about it. Innuendo and double entendre often foxed the authorities of the time, if material was considered 'naughty' it was the fault of the listener and the fetid, lurid workings of their mind!

With music from Marie Lloyd, Joyce Grenfell, Pearl Bailey, Carla Ulbrich and Victoria Wood. Maria chats to Dillie Keane, Barb Jungr and Morwenna Banks about their musical and comic influences, the women they admire, how times have changed and the debt we owe to all the fabulous women who came before us.
