Christine de Luca reflects on the enduring significance and appeal of Dickens' story for our own times.
In Dickens' day his story of 1843 was hailed as a vivid expression of the real values of Christmas. Later, the Scottish novelist Margaret Oliphant wrote that, although it glorified turkey and plum pudding, "it moved us all in those days as if it had been a new gospel."
