Walking round Winchester Christmas Market at the weekend we bumped into Katie, the Cathedral curate. She was manning one of the cabins - not to sell anything, but to invite passers-by to write on ribbons what they would do if they were king or queen for a day. All the ribbons were pinned up on a board wall, a sea of purple and gold. It was a lovely imaginative oasis in a sea of buying for Christmas. While I love seeing all the arts and crafts in the Market – the creativity of talented people always energises me – I would cheerfully avoid the crowds of shoppers. And I never understand why consumerism is either necessary for, or in the spirit of Christmas. Especially since so many people have little enough to spend on necessities, let alone luxuries. Lest I sound a bit like Scrooge – bah humbug! – let me assure you that I’m committed to celebrating good news at every opportunity and my faith calls me to over-the-top generosity. That’s what the example of ‘King Jesus’ as curate Katie called him, demands. Last Sunday the season of Advent began for Christians. It’s a time when we wait and prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas, an annual celebration of what we’re called to live every day. This coming is in the form of a vulnerable, dependent baby born to an insignificant woman forced from home by oppressive powers, who gives birth in a shoddy stable because no-one would make room for her and her family. Some things never change, but the central message is that love can come to birth wherever ordinary people make that happen, even in the most unexpected places. That’s because Christmas is about outrageous compassion not expensive consumerism, and the wonderful thing is, you don’t have to be a king or queen to start living it.
