Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From writer Abdul-Rehman Malik:

Sara, I鈥檝e been hearing a lot of complaints this week about the weather turning cold and the nights getting longer. I鈥檓 trying to be empathetic, but I don鈥檛 think I鈥檓 doing a very good job. The trouble is, I love this time of year. Autumn is the summer of my soul.

It鈥檚 like nature鈥檚 Proms 鈥 a visual concerto of changing light and colour. I rejoice as the leaves turn from green to gold. I breathe in the crisp air and revel in that gilded autumn sunlight that makes the world glow.

I鈥檝e seen pictures of my first autumn. Wearing a knitted orange jumper and matching hat 鈥 no doubt the height of baby fashion in the mid 70s 鈥 I鈥檓 in a pram being pushed through piles of leaves. I look a bit mystified by it all, but my mother is beaming.听 My father, always the photographer, must have been lying in the middle of the leaves to catch those shots. It鈥檚 joyful.听 I get that feeling every year when November rolls around.

25 years ago today, British peace envoy Terry Waite was released from captivity in Lebanon. He had been held hostage for over four years, much of it in solitary confinement. I cannot imagine the joy his family must have felt that day, or the emotions that must have filled him arriving back home to autumnal Britain.

We all know what happened next. Terry Waite became an advocate of reconciliation, eventually returning to Beirut to make peace with those who held him. I organised an event at which Mr Waite spoke several years ago and found him to be thoughtful and gentle, but also unafraid to press his audience to reach out to people who didn鈥檛 think, believe and look like them to seek our common humanity.

鈥淜indness,鈥 the Prophet Muhammad said, 鈥渋s a mark of faith. Whoever has not kindness, has not faith.鈥

Tonight, millions of people across Britain will express their kindness and their concern as 麻豆约拍鈥檚 annual Children in Need appeal takes to the air. They will find common ground in their belief that all our kids deserve the best chance they can get. I鈥檓 sure it鈥檒l be a smashing success.

Kindness like this 鈥 and the service given by people like Terry Waite 鈥 gives off a glow. I鈥檇 like to think it鈥檚 even more golden that the autumn sun I love so much.听
