Farming Today This Week: Crop science and research

Sybil Ruscoe visits the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester where crop science has been practised for more than 170 years.

Much of the food we eat, and its availability, relies on crop science. The study of crops and research in to their breeding, genetics and production is a vital arm of international agriculture. For generations scientists have been tasked with finding ways of increasing yields. But with the global population predicted to increase to 11 billion by the end of this century, there is added focus on how to feed the world while farming sustainably. The Royal Agricultural University at Cirencester has been contributing to the UK's knowledge of crop science since 1845 and new field trials and plot tests are being undertaken every year.
