Young farmers call for funding as a means of getting a foothold in the industry, but is there a difference of opinion between the generations? Charlotte Smith finds out, speaking to Ed Ford, Vice Chair of the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs, and Howell Richards, 25 years a dairy farmer near Carmarthen.
Heart surgeons are perhaps most easily identified with their green scrubs and hi-tech equipment in the operating theatre, but one cardiologist at Royal United Hospitals in Bath has a strong interest in diet and nutrition, and is working with growers in the West of England. We sent Mark Smalley to meet Dr Ali Khavandi, who's behind The Cardiologist's Kitchen website.
This year's harvest isn't one which will go down in history as a massive success. The weather and disease problems blamed for unspectacular yields across much of the country. Its led to renewed calls for more emphasis on and funding for research into crops. All this week on Farming Today, we're looking at crop science - from new technologies and research projects to the great GM debate. Mike Hambly farms cereals and has a herd of beef cattle in Cornwall. He's also chairman of he NFU's Combinable Crops Board - which is behind the calls for more research.
