Sara Mohr-Pietsch talks to the Estonian conductor Kristjan Jarvi, one of the most exciting and inventive conductors around. He talks about his work with his Baltic Sea Philharmonic and his passion for shining a light on music around the Baltic, as well as discussing his family and their move from the Soviet Union to New York in the 1980s. Jarvi also talks about his philosophy for programming concerts and why playing only popular symphonies is worthless.

The pianist Viola Tunnard is one of the great forgotten musicians of last century. Accompanist and mentor for some of the great singers such as Dame Janet Baker, Peter Pears and Robert Tear, Tunnard was a member of Benjamin Britten's English Opera Group, and toured with the singer and comedienne Joyce Grenfell during WWII. To celebrate the centenary of her birth she's remembered by the conductor Steuart Bedford, pianist Roger Vignoles and through Grenfell's letters.

Composer Sally Beamish made her debut this month for the ballet stage in a collaboration with the choreographer David Bintley of Shakespeare's The Tempest for Birmingham Royal Ballet. She talks to Sara about the new score, and as she turns 60 this year, looks back over a successful composing career, how a lost viola led to her becoming a composer and why she feels contemporary composers need to put the audience at the heart of what they do.
