A spiritual comment and prayer to begin the day with the Reverend Kate Bottley.

Edward the Confessor
Good morning
It’s only in recent years that I’ve embraced trips to our nation’s capital. As a child, London filled me with fear and trembling. I went once on a school trip to Buckingham Palace but my first time there as a grown up and for work not tourism was not until I was in my thirties. I can still remember now meticulously planning my trip on the underground and the complete elation of emerging from Westminster station to see the Houses of Parliament and further on the Abbey in front of me. I’m a frequent visitor for work these days but the crowded city can still at times make me feel nervous. But I have found a sanctuary. At the heart of the Abbey is the tomb of Edward the confessor whose feast day it is today and if the meetings fall right I can sometimes manage to get there for lunchtime prayers. To reach the tomb you have to climb a short but steep staircase. It’s worth it, to get to the beating heart of the Abbey. When I kneel there to pray I can still hear the chat of the tourists, the shoes on the stone and the recorded voice on the hand held guides, it doesn’t matter. God speaks and can be heard if we listen carefully even through the clamour. If we seek the peaceful place out it is always there to welcome us.
God of noise and silence,
In the midst of the chaos of life help us to find a place of silence and peace, that we might be equipped and strengthened to walk in the world today.
Amen
