Flood prevention scheme, Livestock breeding, HS2 update
Schemes to slow the flow of rivers prone to flooding are helping to cut water bills. Plus a visit to a project where a water company has paid to redirect a Cumbrian beck.
Caz Graham visits a scheme in Cumbria where a water company has paid to redirect the flow of a river to prevent flooding further downstream. The river near Shap was straightened decades ago, but has now been restored to its original 'bendy' state to help slow the water down. United Utilities, which has paid for the work, says it also helps to filter water as it works its way downstream, cutting consumers' bills.
If you're a regular listener to the programme you'll know what a roller coaster the dairy industry has been over the last few years. A global oversupply, coinciding with a slowing in demand, left dairy farmers across Europe reeling from low farmgate prices. The EU stepped in over the summer with a rescue package of 150 million Euros to encourage farmers to cut production. UK farmers are being paid about 12p for every litre they cut - and more than 1800 have taken up the offer - that's nearly twenty percent of all UK dairy farmers. Across Europe it's 50 thousand farmers.
