Back to school

Good morning.

Many parents and grandparents have taken on yet another year of school runs. The hectic dash to school and to work is what mornings will look like for many with young ones in school. As parents we want our children to do well academically and to enjoy their education. But more importantly, we wish for our children to be happy, to behave well and to have many good friends.

As a teacher I’ve seen for myself that one of the ways in which this can be achieved is by encouraging our children to engage in kind acts. They are then more likely to be accepted by their peers and the likelihood of them being bullied drastically reduced though not totally eliminated because kindness is not always met with kindness. This could then lead to more successful academic achievements and healthier social outcomes. I’ve seen children become happier and build stronger and more satisfying friendships and a selfless social outlook. Children who flourish in this way become very popular amongst their peers. Such acceptance plays a positive role in the emotional growth of children.

We can also promote our children’s wellbeing by helping them learn to be grateful and to show gratitude to others. Above all we as adults must be merciful and kind to children something that Islam insists on and which we can easily overlook in our consumerist go getting society.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, β€œHe who does not show mercy and kindness to children is not one of us.”

Dear God, give us the ability to help our children and grandchildren to be the very best of humanity, amin.
