Great Britain could have medal hopes in the women's long jump, 200m and 100m hurdles finals. Dina Asher-Smith will expect to be involved in the women's 200m final, in which flying Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers went into Rio as the favourite in the absence of London 2012 champion Allyson Felix.

Long jumper Shara Proctor was second at last year's World Championships, but it is fellow Brit Lorraine Ugen who has shown better form this season. USA-born Tiffany Porter has won an array of major championship medals in a British vest, although it is the Americans who are expected to dominate - especially with injured champion Sally Pearson unable to defend her crown.

The final gold medal of the day will be decided on Copacabana beach in the women's beach volleyball. Legendary American Kerri Walsh-Jennings went into the Games seeking a fourth Olympic title but she and new partner April Ross knew they faced a stiff challenge against the Brazilians, including top-ranked Talita and Larissa.
