Friday Night is Music Night - Made In Britain - Ken Bruce introduces a celebration of the British Musical from the Snape Proms .
It's fair to say if there were an Olympic medal for musical theatre we Brits would win hands down. We have a remarkable track record in producing successful, award winning musicals which we then export and perform all over the world. So in this special Friday Night is Music Night we provide a chronicle of Great British musicals - from the Savoy Operas of Gilbert and Sullivan through to the current West End hits of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Minchin.
Richard Balcombe conducts the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Concert Orchestra with guest singers Sophie-Louise Dann, Abbie Osmon, Graham Bickley and Scott Davies. All four cast members have trod the boards in major British productions over the years - Sophie-Louise in Bend It Like Beckham, Made in Dagenham and most recently as Widow Corney in Oliver; Abbie in We Will Rock You and Evita; Graham in The Pirates of Penzance and Sunset Boulevard and Scott in The Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar. We'll start with The Yeomen of the Guard by Gilbert and Sullivan and include works by Ivor Novello, Noel Coward, Lionel Bart, Vivian Ellis, and Noel Gay. There'll be the Charleston from Sandy Wilson's 1950s classic The Boyfriend, tear-jerkers from the pens of Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and a lot of Flash Bang Wallop from the soon to be revived Half a Sixpence by David Heneker. More recent musicals include Matilda, Sunset Boulevard and Blood Brothers.
Concert recorded at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall as part of the Snape Proms on 23rd August.
