Farming and the impact of National Living Wage, Hydroponics, Young auctioneer

How producers are handling a rising wage bill. Yorkshire strawberry grower Richard Morritt says labour costs are 75% of his sales. Steve Leniec of Unite, the union, responds.

How soft fruit and horticultural producers are handling a rising wages bill. Yorkshire strawberry grower Richard Morritt says labour costs now represent 75% of the income from his sales, and he's feeling the pinch. Steve Leniec of Unite, the union, responds by telling David Gregory-Kumar that supermarkets and the public will need to pay more for food.

David also visits Saturn Bioponics in Birmingham, who've pioneered a way of growing plants vertically in tall towers, which with great crop density, allows the farmer complete control over the food, water and even temperature of the plant roots. Now two farms in the Midlands are trialling the new system. David goes along to see how this approach is performing in the real world.

All this week we've been looking at the next generation of farming folk and today we meet Jack Walton, who is off to study at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester this autumn. But before that he's spending the summer holidays travelling up and down the country raising money for RABI - the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. His journey is taking him to 21 different livestock markets. At each one he'll be auctioning a pen of sheep, with the commission going to charity.
