Farming Today This Week: Water Management
Charlotte Smith discovers how farmers and water companies are working together to reduce agricultural pollution in rivers and steams.
Charlotte Smith discovers how the water company Severn Trent is working with farmers in the Midlands to tackle the water quality problem. Farming remains one of the main polluters of rivers and streams in the UK, and as well as harming the environment water pollution raises drinking water treatment costs. We visit the Campion Hills Water Works in Warwickshire and a local farm to see the practical measures they're putting in place to reduce diffuse pollution from fertilisers and pesticides.
We also hear about the 'Hills to Levels' project in Somerset that works with farmers to build natural flood prevention methods throughout the whole river catchment area to reduce future flooding; and Anna Hill visits the Elveden Estate in Norfolk to discover how precision moisture monitoring of potatoes is leading to smarter irrigation and conserving water.
