Script

Good morning.

6.5 million people in the UK are carers, many of that number provide round the clock care, or care substantially in excess of a normal working week. It is an extraordinary workforce, unpaid, and often un-thanked. For the past few years I have not been able to work that much because my daughter needed substantial care. By God’s Grace, she is stronger, and I am beginning to refocus my life.

These years have been hard firstly because I have been watching my child suffer, and secondly because the demands of being a carer are very draining upon one’s physical and mental well-being. There is often very little respite, and very little support.

These years have also been hard because I haven’t been able to engage in looking outward.; Everyday has been about personal crisis management, and acute care.
For me, I will continue to be my daughter’s carer in various ways for some time to come. But recently I began a new project: an online education project, inspired in part by my daughter’s inability to attend school for three years.

It gives me extraordinary pleasure to be engaged in something which allows my brain to be active, and to do something purposeful. I feel grateful for this opportunity to do useful work, to live a life of purpose.

Our Lord, grant those who care for others your Grace and Mercy. As you say in the Qur’an, let them see that with every hardship there is ease as well. Give them strength in the face of adversity, and surety that You are with them.

Our Lord, grant that we be blessed with purposeful work that is useful to us and to others, and that gives us joy and happiness. Ameen.
