Chris Evans' Pause For Thought: Ann Easter

Chris Evans' Pause For Thought: Ann Easter

From Canon Ann Easter, Chaplain to the Queen:

It’s Her Majesty the Queen’s real birthday on Thursday so I’ve been looking for a nice 90th birthday card – not something pink and satin with a gooey verse inside, I think!

But what do you give to the lady who’s got everything? Having had the privilege of visiting some of Her Majesty’s homes, I know there’s no shortage of beautiful objets d’arts, majestic candlesticks and exquisite flowers – though I have seen the Royal jigsaw board, so maybe there’s a really difficult puzzle with baked beans printed on both sides that hasn’t been tackled yet that we could send the Queen - no doubt her children and grandchildren will have some ideas.

While not royal, in our family we’ve had the same problem of what to give each other; my husband says that everything he has is ‘perfectly adequate’ and he needs no more and the children and grandchildren already have bewildering arrays of fluffy, technological and fashionable gifts.

So we’ve been giving each other enjoyable experiences like trips to the theatre. We’ve been to see The Lion King and The Railway Children – I will never forget the look on Arabella’s face when the steam engine came into the auditorium.  Genevieve was not so impressed by a stage production of one of her favourite books called ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ because some bits were left out! But I hope we’ve given them happy memories they’ll look back on with affection.

What can we give to those we love? And, if we love God, it’s even more problematic. In ancient times, people burnt animals and other valuables so that the smoke would reach to God in Heaven; later, we built enormous places we hoped might be big enough for God to live in – but, what does God actually want? It’s quite plain and simple, there in the Bible – Christians believe God wants us to do what is just, to show constant love and to live in humble friendship with God.

And, if we all did just that, I reckon the sound of our laughter would indeed rise to Heaven and gladden God’s heart!
