A spiritual comment and prayer to begin the day with the Reverend Prebendary Edward Mason, Rector of Bath Abbey.

Script
Good morning.
You know, one of things I can鈥檛 stand is being harassed. I guess I speak for all of us.聽
It鈥檚 really not funny being asked over and over again.聽 And I tell you to my shame that I can feel pretty violent in response.
I didn鈥檛 know his name and I didn鈥檛 ask.聽 (Perhaps that tells me something about myself.)聽 Anyway, he asked me for money.聽 Not just me.聽 I was with a group on an educational tour and the one thing I didn鈥檛 need was this guy with his little jokes, his appealing eyes and his rags for clothes.聽 He just wouldn鈥檛 go away.
It was alright at first.聽 Please would I help him with some little money?聽
No, I wouldn鈥檛.聽 It would only encourage him!聽 Much better a united response.聽 We would ignore him and eventually he would give up.聽 But no, he carried on and on.聽 I even spoke to him angrily but he soon returned.聽 He was poor but I was the one that felt a victim!
In the evening, I told my host what had happened.聽 鈥淥h, it鈥檚 John,鈥 he said.聽 鈥淗e鈥檚 always like that.鈥澛
I complained more strongly, 鈥淪omething should be done about it.鈥
鈥淲ell,鈥 said my friend, 鈥淕od can teach his wisdom through the strangest of prophets. You know the injustice being served on my people every day.聽 You know the limitations on John鈥檚 life,.聽 You know how much racial prejudice he suffers.聽
Hasn鈥檛 the Easter story taught you anything?鈥
Jesus set his face to bring good news to the poor and freedom for the oppressed.聽 His resurrection shows that God will not be resisted in this.聽 He鈥檒l be as persistent as John the beggar.
So, Holy God, challenge my complacency and teach me to live out your holy justice every day.聽 Amen.
