Paul Gambaccini blends digital tracks from the week's US charts of songs, albums, R&B, country and rock hits with LP and singles tracks from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'. We hear 'You Really Got Me' by The Kinks and, in honour of the lifetime achievement award for Don Kirshner, 'I'm A Believer' by the group he put togehter for a TV series - The Monkees. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1935 of Bobby Vinton by playing his 1963 American number one 'Blue Velvet'. Paul pays tribute to Merle Haggard, who has recently died, by featuring his 1968 Country number one 'Sing Me Back ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ'. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'All My Life' by K-Ci & JoJo and a different song with the same title by Foo Fighters.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays a song from a UK artist's biggest-selling album in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by Jeff Beck and Bryan Ferry. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the Hot 100 of the other US chart publication 'Billboard'. This week's examples are by Simon & Garfunkel and The Main Ingredient.
Our R&B number ones are from 1965 and now by Solomon Burke and Lalah Hathaway. We hear Country number ones from 1996 and this week by Lone Star and Tim McGraw. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by Robert Plant and Twenty One Pilots. The number one album is 'Mind Of Mine' by Zayn and the best-selling song of the week is '7 Years' by Lukas Graham.
