Chris' Pause For Thought: Julia Neuberger

Chris' Pause For Thought: Julia Neuberger

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

We had people to supper at home last Saturday, and, because two people cancelled, we ended up being 13Μύaround our table. Now, I'm not in the least superstitious, but several of our guests asked if I was putting out an extra chair, with, say, a teddy bear on it. And, indeed, whether we'd serve up food for the 14th person who wasn't there, because 13 is unlucky. So that got me thinking. We Jews have 13 as the age of bar mitzvah, when a boy, and in our synagogue a girl too, becomes an adult member of the congregation. In some years, such as this year, because we have a lunar calendar, we have 13 months, not 12. And God has 13 attributes of mercy in our tradition, taken from the Bible verse in Exodus, β€œAdonai, adonai, the gracious and merciful God....”

Μύ

So we can’t find anything against 13. Some argue 13’s unlucky because there were 13 around the table for the Last Supper. But that seems a bit strange given that, in Italy, home of Roman Catholicism, 13 is a LUCKY number and people use the expression fare tredici, to do 13, as meaning to hit the jackpot!

Μύ

So it’s all a bit of a mystery. But I hate that kind of superstition anyway. So although we were 13 by accident last weekend, I'm going to start having parties of 13 deliberately, with no extra chair in sight. It seems to me that this superstition is worth exploding. We should celebrate the good things associated with the number 13, bar mitzvah, months, attributes of God, hitting the jackpot. And recognise the number is neither lucky nor unlucky. I'm with the Italians and in favour of the number 13- and I hope we can stop people thinking it unlucky. It's as good a number as any other- and we had a great party, 13 strong!
