The Science of Motivation

This Easter weekend, runners in their thousands will pound their way through the streets of Cardiff , chasing success in the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. And amongst theÌýelite athletes will be a few hundredÌýnovices who have only recently taken up exercise - and certainlyÌýnever completed a marathon before.

And they're the ones we're interested in in this week's Science Cafe.Ìý Adam Walton is visiting Cardiff University's School of Healthcare Sciences to talk to the teamÌýcarrying out research into what motivates people to exercise. Dr Liba Sheeran and her colleagues have recruited the novice runners to study, before, during and after the marathon.ÌýThe findings could prove invaluable in understanding what might keep us active and healthy.Ìý

They're not short of motivation at PrestatynÌýRunning Club in Denbighshire. We hear from a new batch of members, happy to give interviews while on the run. And Good Luck to Prof Ian Hall, the Head at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences in Cardiff, who will be running the 13 km on the day on board a research vessell off the coast of Africa!ÌýÌý
