Hope

Good morning. In a recent lecture, Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of Oxfam, shared some statistics about the way economic growth continues to benefit a powerful elite, whilst largely failing to improve the conditions of the global poor.
She challenged those working on poverty and inequality to come up with ‘disruptive’ new solutions, and more imaginative ways to fix what she called the world’s ‘broken’ economy. After she had finished speaking, one university student raised his hand and asked. ‘Given the enormity and scale of the problem, how do you keep going?’
Winnie said that it is the grass roots activists she encounters who inspire her.  People “who are determined to imagine a better world and a better futureâ€
A Christian worldview always holds two truths in creative tension. The brutal facts of a broken, unjust world and Hope that justice will prevail in the end.
But, what difference can just one imaginative idea, really make we might wonder?  As Jesus said, a tiny mustard seed can grow into something very significant.  For academics and activists alike, the bible offers rich spiritual insights for understanding both the causes of, and possible solutions to the world’s broken systems. Wisdom from the past has much to offer.  May people from diverse sources of hope and longing work together to bring transformation to this world.
A prayer for all who long for a better world:
Do all the good that you can. By all the means that you can. In all the ways that you can. In all the places that you can. At all the times that you can. To all the people that you can. As long as ever you can. Amen.
