Well done England. There I’ve said it! You can’t argue with the facts – the England rugby team has been focused, disciplined, bristling with talent. And it deserves to have won the Championship title and the Triple Crown. Now only France stands in the way of them getting the Grand Slam. So, to repeat myself, well done England.

Welsh listeners to this programme will be bound to suppose that I’ve thrown in the towel; some will even think I’ve committed an act of treachery. Ancient rivalries, old scores waiting to be sorted, underlie those gladiatorial battles on the Twickenham turf or in the Cardiff Colosseum. And our warriors will now have to await another day. But fair is fair; the better team won.

There’s a moment in the life of Jesus when he heals a man who was both blind and dumb. No one could have been unaware of his misery. Nor could anyone doubt the remarkable change he undergoes. He can see again and he’s talking his head off. But that’s not enough for some of those looking on. They felt threatened by Jesus and so, though they see what happens and hear the murmured approval of the crowd standing around them, they refuse to accept the obvious. They accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon, they say that he’s been doing the work of the devil. He rounds on them – if you see something good and call it bad, if you can’t accept something that’s blatantly obvious, then you put yourself beyond the reach of anyone’s sympathy, let alone forgiveness.

That’s a simple message. If someone, even someone we can’t stand, does well we should recognize that fact and be glad. You see where I’m going. England won fair and square – well done England. On the other hand, if George North’s last minute try had been awarded, if the game had gone on another ten minutes, if Wales hadn’t lost their captain to injury, if we’d played better in the first half… Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera…
