Paul Gambaccini blends digital tracks from the week's US charts of songs, albums, R&B, country and rock hits with LP and singles tracks from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame'. We hear 'Twist And Shout' by the Isley Brothers in honour of its writer Bert Berns, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Continuing our alphabetical list of inductees, we hear 'Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting' by Elton John. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1947 of Eddie Hodges by playing his hit 'I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door'. Paul pays tribute to Red Simpson, who has recently died, by featuring his country hit 'I'm A Truck'. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Thank U' by Alanis Morissette and the different song 'Thank You' by Dido.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays a song from a UK artist's biggest-selling album in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by Graham Parker & The Rumour and Asia. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the Hot 100 of the other US chart publication 'Billboard'. This week's examples are by the Jackson 5 and the Commodores.
Our R&B number ones are from 1969 and now by Sly & The Family Stone and Lalah Hathaway. We hear Country number ones from 2007 and this week by Carrie Underwood and Little Big Town. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by Puddle Of Mudd and Twenty One Pilots. The number one album for a tenth week is '25' by Adele and 'My House' by Flo Rida is the best-selling song of the week.
