Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:

I wasn’t sure really what to expect on my first trip to the Holy Land a few weeks ago, and but what I did think might happen didn’t and what I didn’t think might happen, did. I thought being a woman priest in a notoriously conservative religious place I might find some problems. After all here in the UK when I’ve been dog collared up in uniform I have had some less than kind comments and looks from people who are strongly against women priests, so I expected that in Jerusalem that would be multiplied. Not so, in fact the exact opposite. I felt like something of a wonderful novelty. Firstly at security where they wanted to know more about the collar round my neck than anything I might have in my bag or pockets. Later a crowd of Spanish Roman Catholic pilgrims outside the Holy Sepulchre wanted selfies, they’d never heard of Gogglebox or Radio 2, Chris, but just loved the idea of a woman priest, ‘How longer must my church wait?’ said one. But it was in the Garden of Gethsemane that I found the biggest affirmation for my ministry.

There I met a group of nuns who spoke no English and I in my ignorance couldn’t even figure out what language of theirs I was failing to speak. I locked eyes with one, I smiled and she grinned, she came over put her hands on my cheeks and beamed at me, without saying a single word, I understood exactly what she was saying and I burst into tears.

Experts tell us that 90% of communication is nonverbal, not what we say but what we do. Jesus was a master of communication, verbal and nonverbal, he even healed people without saying a word and one time just from someone touching the hem of his cloak.  Catching a stranger’s eye and smiling doesn’t always come naturally and of course just as we risk being misunderstood with our words we risk being misunderstood with our nonverbal communication too, but after my experience in Gethsemane with the smiley nun I think it’s a risk worth taking. The smiling nun not only made my day she made me feel valued and affirmed, just with a simple smile. So if I catch your eye on the tube on my way home today and grin at you, you will smile back won’t you?
