Chris' Pause For Thought: Sarah Joseph

Chris' Pause For Thought: Sarah Joseph
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

The marking of time is a strange thing. We mark it with a calendar for sure.

There are also cultural markers of time - New Year which we marked last month, Valentine’s Day which we will mark this weekend. Then there are the great event markers - The big news story that hits us… The moment we met the person we love… The day we got married… Births… Deaths… These are the great landmarks on the timelines of our lives. Some things stick in our minds with such clarity, such potency - emotions emphasising the experience - like a highlighter pen focusing our attention. But great emotion is not the only marker.

On a weekly basis I mark time by my rubbish bin collection. And because we have to sort our rubbish into compostable, recyclable, and the rest - every Thursday I bemoan the fact that my household can’t seem to distinguish between these three things. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly this annoyance comes round.

In the Qur’an, God swears by the importance of time, and says that humanity is completely lost except for those who believe in something greater than this life, and who do good deeds, and who tell the truth, and who are patient. Not exactly an easy list, but it is one that causes me to think.

So every week when I put my bins out, not only am I annoyed by my children not being able to distinguish between an apple core and a tin can; not only am I astounded by how time flies; I also end up thinking β€œdid my life connect with something greater this week? Did I do good things? Was I truthful? Was I patient?” That is a lot of pressure for a bin collection!

Strangely though I am grateful for it. It seems important to take stock, to remember that time waits for no one, to try and make the next week better than the one before. The big markers of birth and death shape us. But so do the small markers. Like waves hitting the coast line - the small markers define us too. It can be imperceptible, the changes of normal days barely noticeable, which is why it is all the more important I believe that we connect with these, and keep track.
