Following in the footsteps of Captain Scott, Ernest Shackleton, Edmund Hillary and Ranulph Finnes - a professor聽at Aberystwyth University has just been awarded the prestigious Polar Medal. Glaciologist Bryn Hubbard has received the accolade for his ground breaking work, drilling boreholes in the Antarctic and Greenland, and retrieving data and samples that give ice mass modellers a more acurate聽picture of what's聽going on in the World's freezer.

He talks to Adam about the thrills and irritations of working in this vast wildreness of ice, and gives listeners a vivid picture of the life of a glaciologist.

And for a relatively small university, Aberystwyth is punching well above its weight in this field. A collegue of Prof Hubbard聽has recently had a glacier named after him, in honour of the research he carried out in the field. Prof Neil Glasser, who works alongside Bryn聽at the Centre for Glaciology, gives his name聽聽to a previously unnamed glacier located on James Ross Island in Antarctica.
