Wolf hunting, Finland
Finland has between 200 and 300 wolves, part of a bigger population stretching deep into Russia. Currently Finland is in the middle of the second year of a wolf management programme which allows a certain number of wolves to be hunted over a certain timeframe. 46 this year, over a month spanning January and February. Many support the scheme, especially those living in the regions of Finland where wolves are more common. However, there is also a worry that too many are being killed and that the wrong individual animals are targeted – namely the younger ones. This week, Darren Laing reports from Finland with interviews from both sides.
