Transgender: Female to Male
Steffan Zachiyah shares his experiences of the mental and physical challenges of his first year transitioning from female to male.
In late summer 2014, Stephanie Thompson took the decision to start living life as a man, as Steffan Zachiyah. From that point on his life has been completely transformed as he adapts to the challenges of transitioning from female to male.
He took the decision to start documenting his transition on YouTube, including how his friends and Jamaican family were reacting to the news, which in turn led to an appearance on Radio 1's Surgery programme. Shortly after that, in February 2015, he started taking the hormone testosterone to begin the physical process of transitioning.
In this documentary for Radio 1 & 1Xtra Stories Steffan has chosen to share the challenges, both mental and physical, during his first year of that hormone therapy. We also follow him on a trip home to Jamaica to reveal his new identity to members of his family based there.
