Good morning. According to the Christian calendar today is the Feast of the Epiphany, when the Church recalls how the star led the wise men to the stable door and how they gave their gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child they found within β the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, to give Epiphany its other name. We donβt really know very much about those wise men, where they actually came from, even exactly how many there were. But we know pretty well what Herod had in his calculating mind when he told them β...when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.β And by St Matthewβs account it sounds like the wise men eventually realised too. βAnd being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.βΒ
I like to think there was a spiritual dimension to that change of route too, that they went back home with a different perspective, a different outlook, in the light of him whom they had knelt to worship. As we go back in the coming days, back home, back to work, back to school and university, I hope our perspective might have changed too, showing us another road.Β
Holy Jesus, before your infant form sages bowed the knee and acknowledged your lordship over all power and wisdom. Grant us also clear vision and courage, that in the light of your presence we may devote our power and potential to your service, even when that requires us to go home by another way. Amen.
