We鈥檝e been putting our Christmas decorations away. It鈥檚 a labour intensive job and my attention threshold is notoriously low. So whilst my dear wife gets on with it, I allow myself to get side-tracked and my favourite escape route is reading the messages that came with our Christmas cards. They arrive in shoals and there鈥檚 never time to read them properly in the run up to the great day.听 So it鈥檚 had to wait till now. And I realise, year after year, how blessed we鈥檝e been by our friends. Friends of all shapes and sizes, all ages, all over the world. People who know all my jokes and pretend to be hearing them for the first time. What would our life have been without them? All the money in the world could never have bought what they鈥檝e given us down the years - love, solidarity, an interest in what鈥檚 happening to us, fun and precious memories by the bucketful. They鈥檙e the best Christmas present ever and reading their messages is a heart-warming experience.
Today鈥檚 a special day in the Christian calendar when we celebrate the arrival of the three kings in Bethlehem and remember the lavish gifts - gold, frankincense and myrrh 鈥� which they presented to the baby Jesus. That鈥檚 what they gave him but what鈥檚 really astonishing is what this fragile child, born in such dire circumstances, gave to them. Once they鈥檇 seen him these majestic strangers knew in their heart of hearts that they鈥檇 been in the presence of someone who, for all his poverty, outshone them by far. It was a revelation, an epiphany. And Epiphany is the name which Christians give to this day.

The simple reading of Christmas messages from all our friends is an epiphany for me, a gobsmacking revelation that takes me by surprise year after year: it opens the doors of perception in my deepest self and shows me that love is all that matters. It鈥檚 the most precious gift there is.
