Good morning.
150 years after his birth Rudyard Kipling βNobel prize winning poet and author - still features on many lists of best-loved British writings both for adults and children. Heβs remembered especially for works such as The Jungle Book, the Just-So stories, Kim and his famous poem βIfβ.
Perhaps one reason for his enduring success is the cheerful authenticity of his character expressed in his work and through his life.
There's a lovely story about an encounter he had with a stranger.
After the First World War he was contacted by French soldier Maurice Hammoneau whose life had been saved when his copy of βKimβ, which was in his uniform pocket, stopped a bullet. Hammoneau gave the book to Kipling (with the bullet still embedded), He also presented him with the medal heβd gained in token of his gratitude. This whole experience must have been painful for Kipling who was struggling with his own grief having lost his beloved son John in the same war.
The Frenchman and Kipling continued to correspond, but what moves me most about their exchange is that when Hammoneau had a son, Kipling insisted on returning the book and the medal for him to pass on to his child.
This shows a care for others and an attention to detail which speaks to me of a man who was committed to the sentiment of his famous poem βIfβ. Its message speaks about seeking to live life to the full, overcoming every challenge with dignity, good humour and grace. If we strive to do this our lives might play a part in telling a greater story, helping others discover new hope and happiness.
Loving God, thank you that you have gifted this world with talented people who stir our hearts and inspire us to grow. Help each of us to give of our very best today in all that we do, that our words and actions may be life-giving for others. Amen.Β
