Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Rabbi Pete Tobias of the Liberal Synagogue, Elstree:

Please excuse me if I seem a little overexcited this morning, Chris. But yesterday I completed the purchase of a new house, which feels great, but also a little daunting. Without wishing to go into the details, when I eventually move in to this house, it’ll be the sixth place I’ve lived in in the last two and a half years.

I said eventually, because there’s a lot of work that needs to be done before this one is ready to live in. A couple of days ago I was talking to the builder who’s going to be working there, trying to arrange a time to meet. He was keen on 9.15 this morning. I explained I had a prior appointment with a man named Evans.

Once the building work is all done, it will be time to attach a ³¾â€¼ì³Ü³ú²¹³ó. This is a small piece of parchment with Hebrew writing that is enclosed in a protective, often decorative, case that’s fixed about three quarters of the way up the doorpost. Some theories suggest this might be a relic of an ancient practice thousands of years ago when people living in the Ancient Near East used to affix stone models of demonic faces to their doorposts to ward off evil spirits.

That’s not the modern purpose, of course. The biblical text inside the little case attached to the doorpost of a Jewish house is a reminder to keep God’s teachings in our minds at all times, even – or perhaps especially – in our homes. Another biblical verse that comes to mind on this occasion tells me that ‘Unless God builds the house, the builders labour in vain.’

I don’t think God’s presence in a house can be achieved by nailing some biblical verses to the doorpost, or by having extensive building works done. I think that God is only present in a house when the people who live in them strive to turn them into homes by offering care and support to all those who pass through its door.
