Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ

Three cheers for Children in Need and good luck to those who get to that Top Gear opening show. A show I got to attend through my charity connections was a very different experience. It was a Phil Collins concert at the Albert Hall. I sat in a posh box with half a dozen of the charity’s pin-striped and power-dressed top people. I didn’t know any of them and things were stiff and starchy - until the concert began.Μύ It wasn’t my kind of music so I tried to be my usual demure self. Not so my hosts. Their jackets were off, ties loosened, shirt tails flapping as they bopped and popped in sheer adulation of one song after another.Μύ

I must confess that when it was all over, I heaved sigh of relief. Only to discover that a rapturous crowd had persuaded the star to offer an encore. I resigned myself to more of the same. But lo and behold he chose a song I knew, a song that my mother used to sing. She had no time for church or formal religion but this song hinted at something much deeper. For her, it was God (not Phil Collins) making the promise: β€œI’ll be loving you – always; not for an hour, not for a day, not for a year but – always.” My mother possessed nothing. Zilch. We lived in one room and she was a semi-invalid but she still thought of God as someone who’d loved her – always. Another of her favourite ditties, sung as she did the housework, was β€œYou are my sunshine.” And this too, she sang as if it were a prayer. β€œYou’ll never know Lord how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

That was the show that was. Phil Collins sang. My hosts contorted themselves. And I sank happily into my own warm little world of memory.Μύ
