It鈥檚 half term.聽 We are surrounded by our children.聽 Actually, my family are all on holiday while I鈥檓 at work and I am in no way grumpy or ungracious about that.聽 Obviously.聽 But it鈥檚 had me thinking rather wistfully about the summer, when we went all together to Brighton for a day of beach, fish, chips, Pavilion and the Pier.

In Brighton, the Pier is the best bit. 聽And the worst. 聽It鈥檚 the rides. 聽I have a love/hate relationship with fairground rides.聽 I love the idea of being scared to death, but I hate actually being scared to death.聽 Actually, I just hate them.

The fact is, I鈥檓 frightened and I was perfectly happy just to watch my stepson Sam queuing for the scariest ride, the one where you plunge from a vast height to certain doom again and again until you鈥檙e begging for mercy.

I had absolutely no intention of joining him - until the patronising, parental聽voice came into play.聽 鈥楪o on鈥�, it said, 鈥榊ou know what鈥檚 best.聽 You can鈥檛 leave the poor lad to do this by himself.聽 He needs some support鈥�.聽 And before I knew it I was strapped in, perched a billion feet above the sea, absolutely terrified.聽

鈥楧on鈥檛 worry, Sam鈥�, I said, reassuringly, 鈥榶ou鈥檒l be fine鈥�.聽

And then, as we plummeted from the heavens, I shut my eyes tight and swore at the top of my lungs as if every word would be my last.聽 Sam, on the other hand, turned to me grinning and said, reassuringly, 鈥榯hat was great. You ok?鈥�

In the Bible, St Paul gave advice to a young friend of his called Timothy, who was the leader of a church where everyone thought they knew best, and he told him, 鈥楧on鈥檛 let anyone look down on you because you are young鈥�.聽 Paul knew Timothy had the qualities of a leader in spite of his age; and that day in Brighton I suddenly realized that Sam had something to teach me 鈥� about bravery and self-control if nothing else.

I reckon, as adults, it鈥檚 worth being reminded, once in a while, that we don鈥檛 always know what鈥檚 best.聽 And, as I watch the children grow, it鈥檚 great to see, just once in a while, that they do.聽 I may be slow to have picked that up, but I鈥檓 learning.聽 And they鈥檙e good teachers.
