Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

Years ago when Woody Allen appeared on television for a rare personal interview, he recalled an early romantic relationship. At one point they seriously discussed marriage, but eventually parted. Woody said the relationship soured because of what he called serious religious differences.Β  β€œI was an agnostic and she was an atheist.”

To some Woody Allen is the most unfunny man on earth. For others, and I admit I’m one of these, he’s a genius who gets us to laugh at ourselves.Β

These days most of us are too busy to reflect on life at all. I believe it’s why Pause for Thought is so much appreciated.

The great paradox of our age is that we are busy and bored at the same time. Our lives are filled like over-packed suitcases bursting at the seams, (as one writer put it). No matter how much we do, there is always something still to do. Worse still we are not sure whether it would make any difference if we did nothing at all. Our lives are both time full and unfulfilled.

To stay sane, we need to be humble enough to recognise the need for true friends who will challenge us to recognise our true worth.

Good friends are a really precious gift. There is something sacred about a friend who listens and gently coaxes me to think, reflect, change and grow: someone who stays with me in times of despair and confusion; who walks with me in grief and sadness; who can tolerate not knowing everything about me; who confronts me with the realities of my life both good and bad.

People like that are among the greatest gifts God gives us. This morning I’m grateful I’m blessed with a few of those precious, treasured friends. I hope you’ll have some in your life too.

As the poet Camus reflected -: β€œDon’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Walk beside me and be my friend.”
